Journey to the Skies: An Interview with Student Pilot Mackenzie Holbrook

Updated: Nov 5

Welcome to our latest blog post, where we dive into the journey of a Silverhawk student pilot navigating her dreams. In this interview, we’ll hear from Mackenzie Holbrook, whose path to aviation is unique and full of adventure. From overcoming challenges to embracing new experiences, Mackenzie's story sheds light on the determination it takes to become a pilot and where we can find the best sweet potato fries (you'll understand this more later). Buckle up—it's going to be a fun, 10-question ride!

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what led you to pursue an aviation career?

I never dreamed of being a pilot. My first flight was at 17, and I originally wanted to travel the world. After college, I worked at a bowling alley and considered becoming a flight attendant for free travel. A mechanic discouraged me, saying I was too old (insert shocked expression from Silverhawk readers!) to become a pilot, so I applied to be a flight attendant. I started with SkyWest Airlines in March 2019 and have since worked for United Airlines and Norse Atlantic Airways, visiting 16 countries. My experience in the flight deck of a Boeing 787-9 inspired me to pursue a career as a pilot.

2. Why did you choose Silverhawk for your training?

Silverhawk is the best flight school in Idaho. I wanted a supportive, woman-owned school, and my interactions with staff, especially Nicole from Admissions, convinced me that Silverhawk would provide the encouragement I needed. Many pilots I knew from SkyWest had trained there, reinforcing my decision.

3. How has your flight training experience been different from what you expected?

I’ve been surprised at how quickly I’ve grasped many concepts, thanks to my aviation background. Earning my private pilot certificate in under five months was unexpected, especially since many outside Silverhawk said it couldn’t be done. My CFIs provided invaluable support, reminding me that flying is a skill learned over time.

4. What has been the most challenging part of your training, and how have you overcome it?

The most challenging aspect has been learning to make decisions as a Pilot in Command (PIC). Transitioning from flight attendant to pilot requires confidence in decision-making, especially regarding safety. I’ve learned to prioritize safety over ambition, understanding that taking a day off for weather or personal well-being is crucial.

5. How do you prepare mentally and physically before each flight lesson?

Getting enough sleep is vital for me. After working mostly red-eye flights, I’m adjusting to a healthier sleep schedule. Listening to my body is important; if I’m tired, I rest. This helps with knowledge retention and overall performance in flight school.

6. How do you balance flight training with other commitments like school, work, or family?

I prioritize studying but also schedule time for family and friends to avoid burnout. I help at my parents' booth at the Nampa Farmers Market and make time for reading as an escape from aviation stress.

7. What advice would you give to someone considering pilothood?

Consider starting as a flight attendant to understand the airline lifestyle. If you’re certain, then enroll at Silverhawk. Flight attendants learn valuable industry insights, which can greatly benefit future pilots.

8. What are your long-term goals?

I aim to work for a major U.S. airline and be based in NYC. I plan to earn my CFI by March 2025 and obtain a job with a regional airline a year later. Additionally, I want to visit every country before 40, live in France for a year, and become fluent in at least three languages.

9. Has flight training taught you anything unexpected about yourself?

Flight training has shown me that I am capable of achieving my goals. Earning my private pilot certificate quickly proved to me that I can succeed in this journey, and I hope to inspire other women to pursue their dreams in aviation.

10. Do you have any fun facts you can share with us?

I run an Instagram account where I review sweet potato fries across the country.

One cool experience was standing on opposite sides of the Indian Ocean in the same week due to a charter trip.

While working for Norse Atlantic, I often spent breaks in the flight deck, enjoying incredible views of landmarks like the Palm Jumeirah and the Himalayas.

Your goals alone are inspirational. You've accomplished so much in just a few years, from earning your private pilot certificate in under five months to juggling your training with work and family commitments. It’s clear that your passions will take you far.

Please keep us updated on your country count! And, invite us to France when you live there! Merci beaucoup, mademoiselle Mackenzie!
