Paying for flight training is one of the biggest considerations for future pilots, and scholarships can be an important piece of the funding puzzle.
Whether you're already training at Silverhawk Aviation Academy or you're still researching how to make flight school financially possible, there are aviation organizations across the country offering scholarships for airplane flight training, helicopter flight training, advanced ratings, and other aviation career paths.
The key? Start looking early and apply often.
Many aviation scholarships are offered annually, so even if you miss a deadline this year, bookmark this page and put the next application cycle on your calendar.

Scholarships We'd Put at the Top of Your List Right Now

Women in Aviation International offers scholarships covering a wide range of aviation and aerospace disciplines. Applicants can apply for up to three scholarships during the WAI2027 cycle.
WAI membership is required, and new applicants must meet WAI's membership deadline in addition to submitting their scholarship applications.
Don't let the organization's name discourage you from checking your eligibility. WAI states that its scholarships are available to members regardless of gender, with individual scholarships carrying their own eligibility requirements.
Deadline: October 3, 2026 for several current opportunities
Helicopter students, this is one you should know.
Whirly-Girls International supports women in the helicopter and vertical flight industry and offers a variety of scholarships and training opportunities.
Awards can support advanced helicopter training and professional development, and individual scholarship requirements vary.
If you're pursuing a professional helicopter career, add Whirly-Girls to your list of organizations to check every year.
Next application period: Fall 2026
The AOPA Foundation is another major resource for aspiring and current pilots.
Its scholarship programs support aviation education and training, with opportunities that can include primary flight training, advanced ratings and certificates, and other aviation career pathways.
For the 2026 fall application period, supporting materials must be submitted by December 31, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Applications: October 1–December 19, 2026
EAA offers scholarships for students pursuing flight training and aviation education.
One of the best parts of EAA's flight training scholarship process is that applicants use one application to be considered for the scholarships for which they qualify.
The next application cycle opens October 1, 2026.
The Ninety-Nines is another organization worth following throughout your aviation career.
Its Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship program has an annual deadline, but that isn't the only opportunity available through the organization.
The Ninety-Nines also has First Wings awards and individual chapter scholarships, which may have completely different deadlines.
That means a closed national scholarship doesn't necessarily mean you're out of opportunities. Check both the national organization and chapters in your region.
Helicopter Students: Look Beyond Traditional Pilot Scholarships
If you're pursuing a helicopter career, don't limit your search to scholarships that simply say "pilot."
Organizations such as Whirly-Girls International and Vertical Aviation International (formerly Helicopter Association International) periodically offer scholarships and training opportunities specifically related to the vertical aviation industry.
Depending on the scholarship cycle, opportunities may support commercial helicopter training, advanced ratings, safety courses, maintenance training, or other professional development.
Don't Assume You Won't Qualify
One of the biggest mistakes students can make is deciding not to apply before they've even read the requirements.
You don't necessarily need a perfect GPA, hundreds of flight hours, or a long aviation résumé.
Scholarship committees may consider factors such as:
Your aviation and career goals
Financial need
Community involvement
Work ethic and leadership
Academic achievement
Aviation involvement
Personal experiences and obstacles you've overcome
Your commitment to completing training
Read the requirements and let the scholarship organization decide whether you're the right candidate.
How to Build a Strong Aviation Scholarship Application
Start a scholarship folder now, even if your first deadline is months away.
Keep an updated aviation résumé, copies of your certificates and medical if applicable, your most recent logbook pages, transcripts, a professional headshot if requested, and a running document containing your aviation experience, volunteer work, accomplishments, career goals, and community involvement.
You should also identify two or three people who could write strong recommendation letters for you.
For example, WAI's current general application requires two recommendation letters, a résumé of no more than two pages, and a 500-word essay. Flight-training scholarship applicants are also asked to provide copies of their pilot and medical certificates and recent logbook pages.
Most importantly, don't submit the same generic essay everywhere.
Your aviation story may stay the same, but your application should explain why that specific scholarship matters to your training and career.
Make Scholarship Applications Part of Your Flight Training Plan
A $1,000 scholarship may not pay for an entire certificate or rating, but several smaller awards can add up quickly.
More importantly, scholarship applications introduce you to aviation organizations, professional associations, mentors, and networking opportunities that can continue benefiting you long after flight school.
Set reminders for annual application periods. Check scholarship pages every few months. Ask your instructors and aviation mentors about opportunities they've encountered.
And keep applying!
